Mobile 2013: Social Media Resolutions for the New Year

Happy New Year to those near and far.

We’ve been thinking about how much social media’s been changing our world, especially when it comes to entrepreneurs and small businesses.  While 2012 was a breakout year for social media with brands and businesses of all sizes realizing campaigns on social platforms, we’re dragging out the magic 8 ball we have stashed in the closet and have come up with our own predictions for 2013.

With more social media platforms vying for attention including Pinterest, Instagram, Google +, as well as long time favorites Facebook and Twitter we find ourselves at a crossroads, disappointed by some channels, excited about the possibility of others, and looking forward to a mobile 2013. While Facebook continues to be relevant, with more than 4 million businesses having pages on the social network, Facebook’s Graph Search, may be a game changer for those engaging with their fans, making it easier for people to discover Pages and learn more about businesses (especially local).

Marketing is ch-ch-changing and how we do it is changing drastically.  Gone are the days of one-note press releases, and aggressive sales bulldozing; what we need to do is integrate social media and stay connected.  Pam Moore wrote an excellent article outlining a plan for Social Media Today  that can be read here. The sell-sell-sell attitude of past years has, frankly, not only become boring but is a turn-off as well. Oh, and did we mention that it doesn’t work particularly well?  With so much out there 24/7, it’s a challenge to find content people care about, that grabs them and makes them sit up and take notice.

We live in a world where we are already bombarded by so much information that we need to continue on our  journey of community and relationship building, sharing our knowledge as experts in our particular arena, participating and interacting more instead of lecturing from any pulpit. Now, it’s not just what your brand says but how it says it. This year we may see ourselves experimenting more, taking bolder steps forward.  In mobile 2013, marketing will take us deeper into the mobile world (after all, that’s where we are), and this evolution will spur us to make sure that our engagement is genuine, our focus, clear.  So…what’s your value? What do you bring to the table?

  1. At this time it seems like Movable Type is the top blogging platform available right now.
(from what I’ve read) Is that what you are using on your blog?
